Donnington Castle plantationNorfolk and the Abolition of Slavery

This resource gives information on the Norfolk connexions to the slave trade, including slave owners and anti-slavery campaigners. It is useful for Key Stage 3 Unit 15: Black peoples of America from slavery to equality? Particularly Section 4: sold into slavery: what was the reality of the Atlantic slave trade? Though it is also a valuable source for younger pupils. Transcripts are provided for many of the written sources.

Evacueees Are we still in England?

The resource is designed to be used for Key Stage 1 and 2 Schemes of Work History Unit 9: What was it like for children in the Second World War? Section 3: Why were children evacuated? and Section 4: What was it like to be an evacuee?

The resource contains images of documents held by the Norfolk Record Office to help with the understanding of the topic. These include official and personal letters, photographs, memoirs and newspaper cuttings. Questions and activities for pupils are included.

The resource is aimed at QCA Schemes of Work Unit 9. Documents included in this resource are taken mainly from Norfolk sources held at the Norfolk Record Office, to provide a local aspect to the topic. It is split into sections:

  • Section 1: What was the Second World War? When and where did it take place?
  • Section 2: What was the blitz?
  • Section 3: Why were children evacuated?
  • Section 4: What was it like to be an evacuee?
  • Section 5: What did people eat during the war?
  • Section 6: In what other ways might the war have affected people?

Each section includes teachers' notes, information about the documents and activities that can be carried out using the material. The resource also includes audio recordings, further reading and ideas on how to make the topic cross curricular.
