Great Yarmouth maps

This is a summary list of maps and plans of Yarmouth made before the large-scale Ordnance Survey maps of 1885.

It includes all known manuscript maps, but not maps covering only a small area such as a field or building.

A few printed maps are given for ease of reference (these are in curly brackets).

Locations of originals and copies are given. Document references are given in square brackets.

List of maps and plans

  • Circa '1000 AD' - The Hutch Map, a 16th century map claiming to show the Yare estuary as it was c1000 AD. Original at NRO [Y/C 37/1]; colour copy in Samuel Woodward, The History and Antiquities of Norwich Castle (1847). In GYM.
  • 1588 - Perspective drawing of Yarmouth. Original in private hands; copy in A W Ecclestone, Henry Manship's Great Yarmouth (1971), another copy in Norfolk Archaeology xxviii (1945). In GYM.
  • In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I ­- A map or view of the town. Original in the British Library Department of Manuscripts [Cott. Aug. 1, 74]; colour copy in C J Palmer, Manship's History of Great Yarmouth (1854). In GYM.
  • Late 16th century - Drawing of harbour mouth. Original in the British Library Department of Manuscripts (among Dawson Turner's illustrations to Blomefield's Norfolk).
  • '1619' - A 19th century plan claiming to show Yarmouth as it was in 1619. Drawn by Robert Cory Jnr about 1814. The original is in Cory's transcript of Manship in Great Yarmouth Borough Library; copy in A W Ecclestone, Henry Manship's Great Yarmouth (1971). In GYM.
  • 1668 - Plan by Sir Bernard de Gomme. Original in TNA [MR 487]; photocopy of entire plan in NRO [Y/PP 25]. Central section in GYM.
  • 1688 - Plan of town, beach and river by Samuel Newton, surveyor. Original in TNA [MR 488].
  • 1734 - Plan of Yarmouth, Gorleston and Southtown in 1734, copy of 1767 by John Deleny. Original in TNA [MP 1207]; photocopy in NRO [Y/PP 23]. In GYM.
  • 1741 - {Prospect of Great Yarmouth by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck. Colour copy in NRO [Y/D 50/378]. In GYM.}
  • Mid-18th century - Map of estate of Sir Jacob Astley in Gorleston and Southtown. Original in NRO [uncatalogued].
  • Mid-18th century - Henry Swinden's map of the estate belonging to the Children's Hospital. Photocopy in NRO [FX 148/1]. In GYM.
  • 1753 - Henry Swinden's plan of Great Yarmouth. Published by M J Armstrong 1779; photocopy of entire plan in NRO [Y/PP 4]. Central section in GYM.

  • Between 1790 and 1810 - {Printed plan of Yarmouth. Copy in NRO [CHC 5142]. In GYM.}
  • 1811 - Plan for dividing the Denes for occupation, Thomas Sutton surveyor. Does not show the part of the town within the walls. Original in NRO [Y/C 37/3].
  • 1813 - Gorleston Inclosure Map. Original in parish custody, microfilm copy of map and award in NRO [MF 108/2]. There is a photocopy of both map and award at Yarmouth Town Hall. In GYM.
  • 1814-77 - Copy of part of the Gorleston Inclosure Map, marked with encroachments on quays. Original in NRO [Y/PH 1253-4].
  • 1814 - Yarmouth Roads, showing batteries. Original in TNA [MPHH 222 (5)].
  • 1818 - Yarmouth Haven from Bridge to harbour mouth, Hamilton Fulton and Sir John Rennie surveyors. Original in NRO [Y/PH 1166].
  • 1819 - {Plan by John Preston. Printed in his Picture of Yarmouth (1819). In GYM.}
  • 1824 - Yarmouth and part of Southtown, John Preston surveyor. Original in NRO [Y/PH 1167].
  • 1826 - Yarmouth Haven and Breydon, John Temperley surveyor. Original in NRO [Y/PH 1168-9].
  • 1826-60 - Corporation Estates map. This is the same plan as below but on a much larger scale and marked to show building developments down to about 1860. Original in NRO [Y/C 37/4]. A small part in GYM.
  • 1829 - Corporation Estates map, Woodrow and Newton surveyors. Original in NRO [Y/C 37/5], microfilm copy also available [MF/RO 211/10]. In GYM.
  • 1829 - Map by J J Scholes. Original in NRO [CHC 5142]. In GYM.
  • 1832 - {Printed map of Yarmouth, marked to show proposed division into three parishes. Original in NRO [CHC 5142]. In GYM.}
  • About 1841 - Yarmouth Workhouse and Children's Hospital. Original in NRO [Y/D 22/35].
  • 1842 - {Manning's plan of Yarmouth, Gorleston and Southtown. Original in NRO [Y/TC 71/1], microfilm copy also available [MF/RO 227/9]. In GYM.}
  • 1842 - North Denes improvements and building sites, by Borough Surveyor. Original in NRO [Y/BE 2/16].
  • 1842 - Gorleston Tithe Map. Original map and apportionment at TNA and at NRO [DN/TA 803]. Another copy of the map and apportionment is at Great Yarmouth Town Hall. Map in GYM.
  • 1843 - Southtown tithe map. Original map and apportionment at TNA and at the NRO [DN/TA 707]; a photocopy of the map and apportionment is at Yarmouth Town Hall. Central portion of map in GYM.
  • 1849 - Great Yarmouth tithe map and apportionment. Copies at TNA and NRO [DN/TA 961]. TNA copy is available on microfilm in NRO. There is a further copy at Yarmouth Town Hall [Y/D 51/2000]. Map and apportionment in GYM.
  • 1853 and undated - Plans of Yarmouth showing sewers, land use and building levels by John Laing, surveyor to Yarmouth Local Board of Health. Originals in NRO [Y/TC 73/84-8].
  • 1861-75 - Corporation Estate, by Borough Surveyor 1861, with additions showing developments to the 1890s and plan of land near the Harbour mouth 1877. Originals in NRO [Y/TC 41/1, 3, 4].
  • 1861 - A copy of the above without the additions but with added plans of building sites on the Denes 1842 and undated. Original in NRO [Y/TC 41/2].
